Future topics in fetal magnetocardiography
نویسنده
چکیده
Since the first fetal magnetocardiogram was demonstrated by Kariniemi in 1974 [1], various groups worldwide have explored potential of investigating fetal cardiac activity using biomagnetic sensing systems and have examined the issues involved (for an overview, see [2]). In the past 25 years, fetal magnetocardiograms (FMCG) have been recorded in healthy fetuses as well as in pregnancies involving various pathologies. Some groups have worked on the development of appropriate instrumentation for fetal applications or have modeled fetoabdominal volume conduction. The purpose of this paper is to review the status of fetal magnetocardiography today and to delineate the topics with which we will be preoccupied in the future. The following subjects will be discussed: instrumentation, modeling, data acquisition and analysis in healthy pregnancies, clinical applications and software.

Fetal magnetocardiography measurements with an array of microfabricated optically pumped magnetometers.
Following the rapid progress in the development of optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) technology for the measurement of magnetic fields in the femtotesla range, a successful assembly of individual sensors into an array of nearly identical sensors is within reach. Here, 25 microfabricated OPMs with footprints of 1 cm(3) were assembled into a conformal array. The individual sensors were inserted...
متن کاملIndependent component analysis and fetal magnetocardiography: a tool for the automatic classification of independent components
Fetal Magnetocardiography (fMCG) allows the non-invasive recording of the weak magnetic field variations associated with the electrical activity of the fetal heart. We used Independent Component Analysis (ICA) for the separation of maternal and fetal signals from fMCG recordings. The identification of fetal components is essential to reconstruct fetal signals. In this work we present a tool for...
متن کاملPrenatal Diagnosis of Fetal Arrhythmias and Assessment of Autonomic Nervous System Activity by Fetal Magnetocardiography
Magnetocardiography (MCG) is a technique that enables the noncontact, noninvasive measurement of electrocardiographic phenomena, and fetal magnetocardiography (FMCG) is extremely useful for the analysis of fetal electrocardiographic phenomena. We have used FMCG for the diagnosis and treatment of a range of fetal arrhythmias, and to perform comparative studies of autonomic nervous system activit...
متن کاملAssessment of intra-uterine growth retardation by fetal magnetocardiography
Fetal magnetocardiography allows the noninvasive registration of the prenatal cardiac electrophysiological signal. The good signal-to-noise characteristics of most biomagnetometers combined with adequate signal processing techniques generally permit the identification of the fetal deand repolarization onsets and offsets to an accuracy of 1 ms. The P wave, QRS complex and sometimes the T wave ca...
متن کاملOptical magnetometer array for fetal magnetocardiography.
We describe an array of spin-exchange-relaxation-free optical magnetometers designed for detection of fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG). The individual magnetometers are configured with a small volume with intense optical pumping, surrounded by a large pump-free region. Spin-polarized atoms that diffuse out of the optical pumping region precess in the ambient magnetic field and are detected by a...
